Colloquium: Six Pillars of PLA Amphibious Doctrine and the Taiwan Invasion

Much has been written lately on the likelihood of a large-scale invasion of Taiwan by China鈥檚 People鈥檚 Liberation Army (PLA). Xi Jinping is said to have told his military to be prepared for the possibility of invading Taiwan by 2027. This presentation, featured in a recent publication by the Naval War College on the prospects for a large-scale PLA assault on Taiwan, and presented by Christopher Yung, the Dean of the U.S. Marine Corps War College and a decades-old China military expert, discusses what we know about how the PLA Navy thinks about the conduct of a large scale amphibious assault of Taiwan. It discusses what the Chinese military has learned from U.S. military doctrine, specifically derived from lessons of the Second World War, and it explores how recent and emerging Chinese military doctrine is informing how the PLA Navy is thinking about the assault. Finally, the presentation discusses what we know about Chinese research on these subjects to determine how seriously the Chinese military is intent on overcoming challenges associated with such a difficult military task.
