Xi Jinping is said to h ave told his military to be prepared for the possibility of invading Taiwa n by 2027. This presentation\, featured in a recent publication by the Na val War College on the prospects for a large-scale PLA assault on Taiwan\, and presented by Christopher Yung\, the Dean of the U.S. Marine Corps War College and a decades-old China military expert\, discusses what we know about how the PLA Navy thinks about the conduct of a large scale amphibiou s assault of Taiwan. It discusses what the Chinese military has learned f rom U.S. military doctrine\, specifically derived from lessons of the Seco nd World War\, and it explores how recent and emerging Chinese military do ctrine is informing how the PLA Navy is thinking about the assault. Final ly\, the presentation discusses what we know about Chinese research on the se subjects to determine how seriously the Chinese military is intent on o vercoming challenges associated with such a difficult military task.\n \nC hristopher D. Yung is the Dean of the Marine Corps War College. He helps run the Marine Corps’ Top Level Professional Military Education School. He was previously the Donald Bren Chair of Non-Western Strategic Thought a nd the Director of East Asian Studies at Marine Corps University. He taug ht at the Marine Corps War College\, the School of Advanced Warfighting\, the Command and Staff College\, and the Expeditionary Warfare School. Dr. Yung is also an Adjunct Member of the Faculty at Georgetown University Sc hool of Foreign Service. He has taught classes on the Chinese Military an d on the Chinese National Security System. Dr. Yung specializes in Chines e strategy\, foreign policy\, and the People's Liberation Army. He has pub lished articles\, chapters in books and reports and served as editor for p ublications on Chinese strategy. His most recent publication\, “The Si x Pillars of PLA Amphibious Doctrine” was published in Erickson\, Andrew et al. eds\, Chinese Amphibious Warfare: The Prospects for a Cross-Strai ts Invasion (Naval War College Press\, 2024).
