Bio
BioDr. Christina Viviano is a planetary scientist at APL. She served on the Science Operations team for NASA’s Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (MRO) Compact Reconnaissance Imaging Spectrometer for Mars (CRISM) instrument (APL-built) and developed the standard set of revised summary parameters and browse products for CRISM data used by the science community to identify and map the surface composition of Mars. She is an author of over 25 scientific publications and a principal investigator or co-investigator on 15+ NASA ROSES-funded awards. Dr. Viviano currently serves as the Mars Exploration Program Analysis Group (MEPAG) Goals Committee (Goal III, Geology) co-lead, as an editor for the journal Icarus, and as the lead for an internal Grants Working Group (APL). She earned an undergraduate degree in astrogeophyics (geology minor) at Colgate University and a Ph.D. in Earth and planetary science at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. Dr. Viviano’s research pertains to the evolution of Martian crust over time, including the environments that existed during its early history as preserved in the rock record. She uses visible/near-infrared and thermal infrared spectroscopy of Mars to gain insight into the composition of the surface exposed today and develops tools to streamline spectral analysis.
